지금까지의 ‘Finding Shin Jung Hyun 신중현을 찾아서' 칼럼은 개인적인 의견과 경험을 토대로 했다. 영국 사람이 왜 잊혀진 한국 음악에 관심을 갖고 있는지에 대해 초점을 맞췄다. 내가 한국 근현대사 전문가가 아니기 때문에 역사에 대해서 쓰는 건 자제해 왔고, 사람들이 신중현에 대한 팩트나 정보, 역사에 대해서 알고 싶다면 아마 직접 찾아보지 않을까 하는 생각에 그 부분은 제하고 있었다.
그러나 시리즈를 연재하면서 신중현에 대해 아예 모르지만 점점 더 궁금해진다고 말하는 사람들이 몇 명 있었고, 그들은 신중현에 대한 정보를 찾기가 얼마나 힘든지를 얘기했다. 사실 그의 음악을 좋아하면 배경 이야기에 대한 설명이 굳이 필요없다고 생각했지만, 조금이라도 더 알리게 되면 사람들이 음악도 더 멋있게 생각하지 않을까 싶었다. 그래서 이번에는 역사 쪽을 조금 건드려 보았다. 신중현과 김정미의 ‘NOW’란 음반부터!

1972년에 신중현은 전성기였다. 60년대부터 서울 뮤직씬에 락음악을 거의 처음으로 선보였고, 인기도 하늘을 치솟았으며 영향력도 컸다. 당시 서울의 음악 왕이었다고나 할까. 그 해에는 한국의 정치 지형이 바뀌고 있었다. 박정희 대통령이 권력 장악을 강화하고 있었다.
개인적으로 나는 한국 정치에 대해 이야기하고 싶지는 않았지만 정치와 음악은, 당시에 특히 신중현에게는 뗄레야 뗄수 없는 것임을 알고 있다. 박 대통령은 당시 유명한 아티스트들에게 (물론 신중현한테도) ‘박정희의 위대함’에 대한 곡을 쓰라고 명령했다. 신중현은 거부했다. 대신 대한민국의 아름다운 자연에 대한 명곡 ‘아름다운 강산’을 썼다.

“1972년 어느날 아침, 한 통의 치명적인 전화가 그의 인생을 엉망진창으로 만들었다. 청와대의 직원이라고 밝힌 사람은 그에게 기분 나쁜 목소리로 박정희 찬가를 만들도록 강요했다.”
자신을 찬양하라는 곡을 쓰라는데 거부한 뮤지션을 박 대통령이 좋아할 리가 없었다. 박정희는 신중현의 음악을 바로 금지했고, 군부 경찰은 로큰롤 스타의 긴 머리카락을 잘랐다. 마약 소지 혐의로 구속된 것도 찬가 작곡 거부가 이유였을 거라고 신중현은 회고한다. 대마초 사건으로 얻어맞은 이들은 이름 있는 대중예술인이되, 저항적이지는 않았다. 오히려 당시 로큰롤보다 ‘양희은', ‘김민기' 등 포크가 상대적으로 저항적이었다. 유신 시대는 톱 클래스 뮤지션인 신중현이 저항적 인물이라는 프레임을 씌웠다. ‘억압'과 ‘저항'은 군부가 덧씌운 이분법적 프레임이었다.
신중현은 음악을 포기하지 않았다. 대부분의 친구들을 잃고, 수많은 팬들도 떠나갔지만 그는 물밑에서 조용히 음악을 지속했다. 그의 곁을 지키는 몇 안 되는 사람 중 한 명은 가수 김정미였다. 둘은 1973년에 DIY로 명반 ‘NOW’를 발매했다. 다음 연재에서는 그 부분에 대해 이야기를 이어나가 보려고 한다.

Until now, I’ve written about my take on Shin Jung Hyun’s music, my own personal experiences with and reactions to it, because I thought people might want to know how an English man got so into this ‘forgotten’ Korean music.
In the back of my mind I’ve always had the idea ‘if people want to know just history or facts, they can just look it themselves, I’m not really a Korean modern history expert anyway, so it might seem silly to try and write about it myself.’
But since starting this series, I’ve had a lot of feedback from people who know nothing about Shin Jung Hyun but are becoming curious about him. And even though knowledge about his story isn’t necessary to enjoy his music, I think knowing just a bit about where he’s coming from can make him even more exciting to listen to.
So, just briefly, I’ll try and say a bit about what I know about 1973’s album with Kim Jung Mi: ‘NOW’
In 1972, Shin Jung Hyun was at the peak of his musical career, a highly influential and popular figure, having basically introduced guitar based rock to the Seoul music scene. In that year however, the political landscape of the country was changing, and President Park Chung Hee was tightening his grip on power.
I don’t have much of a personal interest in Korean politics in that time, but I can say that it had an affect on music and Shin Jung Hyun in particular. President Park ordered Shin, along with other musicians at the time, to write a song dedicated to himself. Shin refused and instead wrote ‘Beautiful Rivers and Mountains’, a song dedicated to the beauty of Korea itself.
Park didn’t like that.
Shin Jung Hyun’s music was banned, his hair was cut by police, and in an instant, he lost everything.
But here’s the incredible thing: that didn’t stop him. Abandoned by most of his friends and followers, he went underground, and one of the only few people who stuck with him was singer Kim Jung Mi. Together, they made the masterpiece ‘NOW’, in very much DIY fashion, and I can only say his is an amazing, inspiring story of true and genuine art, even if it put himself in danger.
